goodandlovely
The idea for Good & Lovely came about because of a failed tampon run for the woman on the left
by the guy on the right. We were up snowboarding, I was done and she and our niece weren't. She asked me to pick her tampons up when I went to the mountain store but they were out there, and at the next store, and the next a ways down the mountain. When we got back to the city they were out everywhere and it turns out they were selling for a ton on ebay. A light bulb went off that day and a realization that women go through a lot with having a period, a lot more than I had realized before. Once the magnitude of what women go through was brought home to me I spent a lot of time talking to every woman I knew about their experience and what could be a good way to be caring and make that time a little better. Many were excited to finally relate what they dealt with to a guy who actually wanted to know and some were happiest to not talk about it at all (especially to a guy). These discussions took me from just thinking about a possible business idea to a real passion for making womens lives better. Once I knew what I wanted to do I recruited (read:pleaded for help from) a couple of the coolest and hardest working people I knew,
and
. Psalms is so respected by every one I know that when I would say, "yah, Psalms is working with us" people would instantly think the idea had merit! She kept us on track and informed nearly every decision in this business. Chris' design of the site speaks for itself, we get constant compliments on his lovely work. And before you ask, he did the site as a favor and his day job graciously shared him with us so, he's probably not available. Along the way some more wonderful women joined us because they believe in our vision. Virginia volunteered her skills as a writer and creates original articles for our newsletters out of the goodness of her heart (on the left here:)
Harmony on the right has volunteered her social media skills and will be managing our facebook and twitter and other media. And our most recent team member is Hannah
who spends as much of her free time as she can helping us - when she's not at her day job or planning her wedding :)
One of the things that we are most excited about is our giving focus. We have a vision of wiping out the instance of a woman having to deal with the insane indignity of going without feminine care. It is ridiculous and seems so stupid in a country as rich as ours. I think it's the fact that it's so doable that gets us excited too. We can actually do this together. It will take time but we will get there and that just seems so fun and cool and let's do it!
We will soon be adding a menopause version of the LovelyBox to our lineup and this is one of those actual "popular demand" situations. Friends of ours going through or on the other side of menopause basically told us to do it and it didn't seem like we had an option. If you have never spoken with someone who has been or is going through menopause, you should. It's one of the most intense things and it's really common that it's really bad. It's not just hot flashes and a minor change. It can be close to your whole entire life turning upside down as your body really betrays you. One friend was relating some of the particularly embarrassing moments in getting through menopuase and she asked me if I wasn't embarrased as a guy to be doing a business like this. At first, standing in the feminine care aisle at Winco for a long time, I definitely was, but after working with women on this project and seeing how much passion our customers and people who find out about us have, I am thrilled to be doing this and think it's stupid that a guy would need to be embarrassed to want to make a difference in the lives of women.
We know that our little care packages showing up in your mailbox can only do so much but we feel really passionate that we are making the lives of our members better. Whether it's the wave after wave of difficulty that a woman in menopause faces or that monthly downer of your period we have chosen some of the most obvious areas for improvement in womens lives and we aim to make as much of an improvement as we can.
